Kingston Range for 2026;

Kingston super

Updated for 2026! The MTD Kingston Super is a precise combination of power and finesse. With high output humbucking pickups and myriad switching and EQ options, you will never be lost in the mix or wishing you had more.

The Super features an Ash body and Roasted Maple neck with a Roasted Maple and Ebony fingerboards.  The roasted neck not only provides more stability, but also makes for a more ‘broken in’ sound and feel. MTD’s asymmetrical neck and compound fingerboard radius allow the player hours of comfortable, fatigue free playing. The Buzz Feiten Tuning System provides precise intonation up and down the fretboard.

Like all MTD Kingston instruments, the Super undergoes a rigorous quality control and setup process in our Kingston, NY facility from master technicians. The robust, top-loading, Quick Release Bridge allows for speedy and easy string changes, while the Licensed Hipshot Ultralite Tuners provide confidence without neck dive.

The active EQ of the Super features +/- 6db of boost/cut for each of the three specifically selected frequency points, like the rest of the Kingston models. However, the Super also sports a 3 way mini toggle for each of its MM style pickups. In the down position, the pickup is in Series Mode, providing a bold punch and aggressive growl. In the middle position, the pickup is in Single Coil Mode, which will make each pickup sound brighter and sweeter. In the up position, the pickup is in Parallel Mode, providing slightly lower output than Series Mode but more clarity and definition. When both pickups are in Single Coil Mode and the blend pot is in the center position, the pickups are hum-cancelling.

With all these premium appointments, flexible electronics and finishes to match, we think the Super is just that – super!

Kingston Z

Updated for 2026! The MTD Kingston Z is the flagship model of the Kingston line and takes many of its design cues from our Handmade USA MTDs.

To further enhance the relationship between the Kingston and USA models, the Z now features an Alder body, Maple Burl top and Roasted Maple neck with a Roasted Maple, Ebony and Rosewood fingerboards more aligned with what our customers expect from an MTD instrument.

Like all MTD Kingston instruments, the Z undergoes a rigorous quality control and setup process in our Kingston, NY facility from master technicians. The robust, top-loading, Quick Release Bridge allows for speedy and easy string changes, while the Licensed Hipshot Ultralite Tuners provide confidence without neck dive.

The active preamp provides +/- 6db of boost and cut across bass/middle/treble. The reverse split coil pickups provide punch and clarity throughout the spectrum. The matching headstock provides an elegant, high end look and the body contours follow an ergonomic and attractive design which lends itself to many fantastic finishes.

USA Bartolini and Hipshot upgrades are available!

Kingston Norm Stockton Signature Saratoga

A pillar of the bass community, Norm Stockton has been part of the MTD family since 1997. Between touring, sessions and countless clinics, he has distinguished himself as a brilliant player, teacher, and ambassador for the instrument.

The Kingston Norm Stockton Signature Saratoga is a natural evolution in our relationship. MTD introduced the Norm Stockton USA Signature in 2013. The Kingston version is an extension of that initial collaboration and features a familiar aesthetic to go with appointments not found on other Kingston instruments.

“I had high expectations for the Kingston NS, and it absolutely blew them away! Gorgeous looks, spectacular playability, and TONE for days. Everyone who’s played it has been floored.”
-Norm Stockton

Among those appointments are the custom USA Bartolini pickups and electronics package that deliver a tonal punch that must be experienced. The electronics feature active/passive switching and a custom mid-shift switch to select between 250hZ/450hZ (same frequencies as the USA version NS), making this instrument tonally unique among our lineup. Combining these electronics with the carbon reinforced maple neck, and a beautiful alder and maple body makes for a bass that is both incredibly versatile and thoroughly inspiring.

Kingston AG 5 and 6

A bass worthy of a legend

Having been friends with legendary bass player Andrew Gouché for years and having already created an Andrew Gouché signature model for the MTD Handmade American line, the music didn’t end there.

The MTD Kingston Andrew Gouché, or the Kingston AG as we call it, began in 2010, with close collaboration between Michael Tobias and the signature artist, with the goal of bringing the best features of the Handmade Andrew Gouché Signature to the Kingston line.

Like all MTD Kingston instruments, the AG undergoes a rigorous quality control and setup process in our US facility from master technicians. The AG features our signature asymmetrical neck and compound fingerboard radius, which allows the player with hours of comfortable, fatigue free playing. The Buzz Feiten Tuning System provides precise intonation up and down the fretboard. The robust, top-loading, Quick Release Bridge allows for speedy and easy string changes, while the Licensed Hipshot Ultralite Tuners provide confidence without neck dive.

The Kingston AG features a carved alder body, with a stunning burl maple top. Alder makes a very warm, big sounding, slightly compressed, punchy bass.  The burl maple top makes each bass unique, while the Purpleheart fingerboard compliments the custom smoky purple satin finish, tying everything together for Andrew’s favorite tone and feel. The AG also features proprietary MTD Bartolini soapbar pickups, identical to the pickups found on our USA instruments. This bass also featured a custom Bartolini USA Preamp providing +/- 12db of boost/cut on each of the 3 specially selected frequency bands.

The MTD Kingston Andrew Gouche is a stunning instrument made in partnership with an absolute master of his craft.

Andrew Gouché plays both his MTD Handmade Signature model and his Kingston AG on stage, in bass clinics, church gigs, and just about everywhere else. Interested in hearing the magic tone for yourself?

Kingston Lynn Keller Artist Edition Bass

The MTD Kingston LK is the brainchild of Michael Tobias and artist Lynne Keller:

As I’m a petite person, I needed a bass that fit me and could be easily worn for long hours without causing neck and back pain… – Lynn Keller

While this bass was originally designed to meet the needs of players smaller in stature, don’t let that fool you. The LK is an equally well-appointed instrument made with the same precision and thoughtfulness as the rest of the Kingston Series.

The LK is a 32-inch scale bass with 24 frets featuring an Alder body and a Roasted Maple neck with Roasted Maple or Rosewood fingerboards.

Like all MTD Kingston instruments, the LK undergoes a rigorous quality control and setup process in our Kingston, NY facility from master technicians. The robust, top-loading, Quick Release Bridge allows for speedy and easy string changes, while the Licensed Hipshot Ultralite Tuners provide confidence without neck dive.

The Matte Black LK features a proprietary set of pickups as well as a powerful 3 band eq. The EQ provides +/- 6dB of boost along all three bands. The active/passive switch allows you to bypass the EQ completely while the passive tone control gives you even more tone shaping options in either mode.

The Natural Burl Matte LK features proprietary Bartolini USA Pickups and a proprietary Bartolini USA Preamp. The pickups provide enough oomph for any gig while the preamp provides +/- 12dB of boost/cut to the three bands of EQ. The preamp also features an active passive switch and a passive tone control if you want to go old school with it.

FINISHES

The MTD Standard Finish is a catalyzed acrylic urethane satin that looks and feels a lot like oil but is many times harder without building great thickness. This allows the bass to breathe, sounding more wooden.

Other finishes are available upon request.

MTD Handmade American bodies and necks are ergonomically carved to allow comfortable access to the extended scale bass. In general, ash (medium weight) has more growl and is more aggressive, poplar bodies have more punch, makore has similar properties to mahogany, however it has more sparkle and presence.

Alder makes a very warm, big sounding, punchy bass, slightly compressed. Adding a top helps to focus the low end. A hard top tends to create a quicker response with more bite and definition while a soft top will tend to round out the voice.

A wenge neck and board add compression and focus to the speaking voice of the bass. A maple neck and rosewood board is more open and slightly warmer than a maple neck and maple board. Ebony on maple is very quick in its response with lots of snap.

We have been using ash as a neck material and found it to be very similar to wenge in its focus but more “open”. We think it works best with a maple board.

ELECTRONICS

The pickups and active electronics are a proprietary design for MTD made by Bartolini Inc. which consist of a master volume and pan pot, treble, mid, bass cut and boost, with center click (from neck to bridge).

The three position switch selects the mid range cut and boost point. Down is lower mids, center is middle and up is upper mids. When the mid pot is at center click, the switch has minimal effect.

The EQ has 2 batteries and our new proprietary Bartolini/MTD preamp is +18 volts. It will debut at NAMM 2020, replacing the previous +/- 9 version while keeping the same voicing.

EQUALIZATION

MTD Basses can be made to sound very “traditional” by cutting the mids all the way at 1000 (switch in top position), and boosting the bass and treble to 10 with the blend pot at center. This offers a great slap tone.

Boosting the mids at 250 ( switch in lower position), with bass at 10 and treble at 9-10 with the blend pot on the bridge pick up gives the early Bartolini TCT tone. This offers a very percussive finger tone.

*These are just suggestions. The tone will vary depending on the rig and technique used.

HARDWARE

Bridges and tuners are custom manufactured for MTD American Basses by Hipshot. All MTD Handmade Basses use the revolutionary Buzz Feiten Tuning System which enhances tuning dramatically, allowing the player greater freedom of expression.
