NECK

Comfort
This is the master element of the bass' sound and comfort. It always receives particular attention every time we develop new concepts to improve its performance. Because the neck is not mass produced, each one can be verified individually by our luthiers. With their hands and their eyes they will make sure nothing was overlooked. And with your hands you’ll feel it !

Wood

We use the same maple wood selected by great classical instrument makers to manufacture the neck. It is selected in France's forests and dried naturally for years before it will be cut and used. Its humidity level is strictly controlled while it is stored.

10/90 Neck System™

This exclusive advanced concept of 10% carbon and 90% wood replaces the traditional metal truss rod with a dense carbon strip to reinforce the neck. Employed for 18 years on all Vigier guitars and basses, this concept makes the neck strong and stable during climate change. We never believed it was logical to drill a hole through a neck and then insert a rod of metal inside. Because wood necks vibrate, they can absorb the energy of the string and shorten sustain. The 10/90 neck is solid, notes ring longer and your sound is precise and powerful.

Finish

In order to completely protect the neck as well as enhance its feel and play, a mat varnish was sprayed on it.

Fingerboard and Frets

You can choose from rosewood or maple wood for the fingerboard. Each fingerboard is rectified to the one hundredth of a millimetre to ensure it's exceptionally straight. 24 medium gauge frets will then be fitted, also rectified and polished meticulously.

New Hardened Zero Fret

A zero fret has always been fitted on all of our instruments. This slightly higher fret’s role is to even open or fretted string notes, ensure perfect string height, minimise string friction and help avoid de tuning, especially when using the tremolo. Now, thanks to new technology, we’ve been able to harden it so it lasts longer and make it removable so it’s easier to replace if needed.

Delta Metal Fretless Fingerboard

Only Vigier offers this unique fingerboard. Gold in color, it is immediately striking and has a hard surface that will stay even for years. Its sound is so rich in harmonics that you'll even hear them evolve throughout the length of your note. Don't be fooled into thinking it only sounds metallic it also has a very warm sound and can emulate a double bass sound. One thing's for sure, if you're looking for a fretless bass and are ready to enter a world of new sounds and ideas you must try the Delta Metal fingerboard.

Electronics/Hardware

Electronics - Arpege

Featuring the custom Vigier Humbucking pickups that have three screws to adjust height and tilt. Electronics is an active circuit that has a three band eq for each pickup

Bridge - Excess

This solid, quick-release bridge was specially designed to fit in with the Excess' modern shape. To change strings, you simply lift the string away. The saddles are set in individual tracks and have independent height and intonation adjustment. To help remove extraneous noise, the saddles can be locked into position once adjustments are complete.

Bridge - Arpege/Passion

Individual cast bridge pieces offer excellent sustain and tonal characteristics.

Sound - Excess

We could go into a lengthy description of the numerous sound possibilities the Excess can give you, but we seriously think the best thing is to get your hands on one and hear for yourself.

Electronics

We sprayed a shielder inside the electronic cavity as well as on the backplate to reduce hum when playing at high volumes. The wiring is meticulously done and our brand choice for jacks is Switchcraft. All of these details combined, guarantee the Excess a top and reliable performance.

Active Controls

VOLUME
PICKUP PAN POT
ACTIVE BASS EQ CONTROL Offers +/-20dB cut/boost in the bass frequencies
ACTIVE MEDIUM EQ CONTROL Offers +/-20dB cut/boost in the medium frequencies
ACTIVE TREBLE EQ CONTROL Offers +/-20dB cut/boost in the treble frequencies
HUM-CANCELING CIRCUIT Eliminates the hum usually associated with single-coil pickups to create a true studio-quiet performance: single-coil tone without the hum.

Output

To prevent your guitar cable from being pulled out while you’re playing, or connect a transmitter, we recessed the output jack into the edge of the body.

Pickups

The Excess is equipped with twin single-coil pickups designed by Benedetti. Two Alnico magnets are fitted for each string. They have a wide frequency band that accurately reproduces low-end and high-end response. Only the finest materials are used ; Alnico 8 magnets for the poles and pure copper and silver alloy wire for the coils. To reduce microphonic feedback, the pickups are wax potted and bolted down with 4 adjustment screws

Body

Comfort

We designed the shape of the body with the thought of improving the harmony between you the player, and the bass. The perfect balance of the bass is achieved by aligning the neck with the axis of the human body. The Excess weighs approximately 3.2Kg and is undoubtedly one of the lightest basses in its category. So, for those players who play spectacular, action filled concerts or just endlessly somewhere, we are positive that you’ll appreciate its manageability and lightweight. We use real, solid, alder wood for the body. Also selected in France’s forests, it's dried naturally for years in our factory before it will be cut and used. The body is made up of only 2 center-joined pieces not 4, or sometimes even 7 pieces like other makers.

Finish

The summit of quality is denoted in our finishes. Our master finisher sprays over 10 coats of varnish between numerous sanding procedures and then waits a minimum of one month before polishing to obtain a shine and protection on the body that will last throughout years and earn you some envious glances. Strap Pin

A unique system where the fixing screw is screwed into a metal sleeve that is mounted in the bass to prevent threading of the wood and lose strap buttons.
